NJL AND CCGNJ KICK-OFF 2009 “NOT 18 YET? NO BET” AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Donald Weinbaum, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, Inc. (CCGNJ), joined with Robert Kersey, New Jersey Lottery Deputy Director of Sales, to kick-off the Lottery's 2009 “Not 18 Yet? No Bet” Annual Awareness Campaign.”
This initiative is undertaken each year, in conjunction with National Responsible Gaming Education Week, held this year August 3-7, to educate and remind residents that there is an age restriction on lottery play in New Jersey .
News reporters were on hand at the Pantry 1 Food Mart, 2013 Hamilton Avenue in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, as NJL Deputy Director Kersey stressed that it is important to “Know the Law” - NJSA 5:9-15 of the Lottery State Statute. He discussed the Lottery's continued commitment to responsible play and the prevention of underage gambling.
CCGNJ Executive Director Donald Weinbaum discussed how important it is for young people to know and understand the law. He emphasized the opportunity high schools have to make use of the Council's High School Seminar Program. The program provides instructors to conduct free sessions in schools to educate students about the risks related to underage gambling, and about the dangers and the warning signs of problem gambling. Further, he advised that the Council provides training and assistance for teachers, guidance counselors, and other student assistance professionals. He also noted that the CCGNJ provides the GAP Program (gambling awareness and prevention curriculum) for grades K-12.
The New Jersey Lottery has maintained a long-standing, cooperative relationship with the CCGNJ and is proud to support the vital mission of the Council. For distribution to students throughout New Jersey who attend the CCGNJ's high school lecture series, the Lottery has provided the Council with supplies of the “Not 18 Yet? No Bet” brochure, as well pencils containing the message, “LOTTERY IS NOT CHILD'S PLAY. You Must Be 18 Or Older To Play The New Jersey Lottery.”
