NJ LOTTERY KICKS-OFF “NOT 18 YET, NO BET” PROGRAM
Retailer Review Program Ensures Underage Gaming Signage is Properly Posted
New Jersey Lottery officials were joined recently by the Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ, Edward Looney, at Lottery retailer Express Food Market in Trenton to launch the Lottery's annual "Not 18 Yet? No Bet" campaign, an annual review program to ensure that each of the 6,100 retailers is properly posting special “Not 18 Yet, No Bet” decals on their Lottery “Green Machines”.
Through this initiative, the Lottery is placing new emphasis on its continued commitment to responsible play and preventing underage gambling. Retailers are being reminded of the Lottery statute that prohibits the sale of lottery tickets by or to anyone under the age of 18. The retailer review program is being conducted by a combination of Lottery security and sales staff and will be completed by the end of September.
During the "Not 18 Yet? No Bet" campaign, the Lottery is increasing distribution of a free anti-underage gambling brochure for retailers and players that includes information that “Lottery is not child’s play.” This brochure is available at each of 6,100 registered Lottery retailer locations, at all Lottery-sponsored exhibits and fairs, as well as through the Lottery web site www.njlottery.net . What’s more, each retailer location has been provided with a free decal, Not 18 Yet? No Bet, to be displayed on each Lottery “Green Machine.”
“This State Lottery has a longstanding commitment to promoting responsible play and discouraging underage gambling of any kind,” said New Jersey Lottery Executive Director Michellene Davis, Esq. “We have an active partnership with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey and look forward to working with them for years to come on a myriad of responsible gaming outreach efforts.”
The Lottery has participated on the Council of Compulsive Gambling’s Board of Directors since June 1999. Furthermore, the Council’s gambling hotline (1-800-GAMBLER) is printed on every Lottery ticket, brochure and signage, and also appears as a tag line on all of our radio and television advertisements. Additionally, the Lottery’s web site directs visitors to the Council’s site (www.800gambler.org <http://www.800gambler.org>) which provides the public with free information and help for compulsive gambling.
“I am very grateful to the Lottery for their support and commitment to all of our initiatives,” said Ed Looney, the Council’s Executive Director. “The Lottery continues to be a great partner in promoting the importance of playing responsibly."
“As a former criminal defense attorney I have witnessed the vestiges of the disease of addiction,” continued Davis. “I am sensitive to the addiction of compulsive gambling and am especially dedicated to uphold our commitment to the Lottery’s Responsible Play initiative.”
